It’s occurred to me that when I write my book, I may have to devote a section to plumbing. Water and its flow has become an analogy for my life.
If you are taking notes on my healing journey (don’t worry, there’s no quiz) – this is not a once and done process. I’ve had to revisit various issues time and again. Just when I thought I was over it, another memory or emotion rose to the surface and I was forced to revisit it again.
There are days I am full of anger. Many of us are seeing red about the state of the world. And those scars we carry over our lifetimes? The painful parts we didn’t ask for but it’s our responsibility to heal from.
I think that’s where a lot of us get stuck. Holding on to anger and resentment isn’t helpful – it can literally make you sick.
We must find a way to let it go; it’s too draining otherwise.
Here’s some of what has been draining me:
Chasing Connections
I can’t force connections in real life or on social media.
I guess I’m just not that social?
There is a reason creators like me repeatedly ask for Disentanglement.ca page follows, likes, shares and comments.
The “socials” were never about being social. Meta’s objective is to make money – plain and simple. Algorithms are not anyone’s friend and I’m rethinking my social media strategy – Instagram in particular. What a drain !
The blog? In a world that’s starved for connection, every story (humorous, thought provoking, nostalgic, self-improvement, etc.) matters … but convincing someone to contribute? Well, I just can’t.
What Will People Think?
That’s a tough one, isn’t it? After all, most of us were conditioned to believe we need to be liked in order to be successful. Living life authentically does not guarantee you will be universally loved. Quite the opposite in fact.
Sharing my story publicly is one of the bravest things I’ve ever done.
No doubt tongues are wagging.
People have already made a decision – they either like me or they don’t. Whatever I say or do confirms what they already believe.
Perfection
So many of us try to live up to the unrealistic standard of perfection. I know where my quest for perfection comes from (that helps) but it’s a process to get that monkey off my back. With painstaking purpose, I’ve been posting raw and unedited YouTube videos. Disentanglement – YouTube
Aren’t we all exhausted by the fakeness of social media?
Isn’t it time for some truth?
The Unknown
We are living in a time of great uncertainty. It’s difficult not knowing what comes next.
Many of us spend of our lifetime trying to control the outcome.
Life has always worked out for me so I try not to dwell on the uncertainty. Do I have moments of anxiety and fear? You bet.
One day at a day, one breath at a time.
What’s Not Mine to Carry
Not my problem but I made it mine! As a “fixer” from a young age, I have gone above and beyond to help others. A midnight emergency? Yep, be right there! Death in the family, of course, I’ll be at the funeral and I’ll bring you food for the week too. Too much work to do? Of course, I’ll help.
Until I no longer could.
Sometimes, the most loving kindness we can show someone is to walk away and hope they learn to stand on their own two feet.
I’m grateful for the drain.
What will you let go of?
Do you have a story to share? I’m always on the lookout for new contributors looking to share stories about life. Funny, poignant, an issue that will get under our skin, the sky is the limit … drop me a line. I’d love to chat.
